Seussical: a musical for the entire family opens June 2012

Dr. Seuss published his first children’s book 75 years ago and has since blessed the world with dozens more.  West Jordan Theater Arts and the Sugar Factory Playhouse are presenting Seussical, a musical production featuring the wonderful publications of Dr. Seuss.  The main story is based on Horton Hears a Who and Horton Hatches the Egg, but there are stories and characters representing eighteen of Seuss’s most popular books. “Seussical” was written and set to music by Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

This musical story features The Cat in the Hat (Scott Butler) telling the tale of Horton the Elephant (Shelby Maughan) discovering a small community of Whos living on a speck of dust.  Nobody believes Horton’s story except Gertrude McFuzz (Kaydee Brown) and, of course, the entire village of Who.  Horton meets Jojo (Thomas Rowe), the smallest Who, and they work together to try to save Whoville.  Other featured characters are Mayzie LaBird (Jen Crabb), the Mayor of Whoville (David Pack), Mrs. Mayor (MeriLynne Michaelis), Sour Kangaroo (Sonia Maughan), and General Genghis Khan Schmitz (Travis Green).

Though based on children’s stories, this delightful script and wonderful music isn’t just for children.  The entire family will enjoy the jungle creatures, the Seuss characters, the twists and subplots of this production. Seussical is directed by Michelle Groves, with music direction by Heather Shelley and choreography by Elise Groves.

Performances run every evening (except Sundays), June 14 – 25, 7:30pm at West Jordan High School, 8136 South 2700 West.  Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children, students and seniors, and are available at Macey’s Food Store in West Jordan or at the door.
